Several City of Rio Grande City staff attended the Starr County Domestic Violence Coalition Rally on Thursday, October 19, in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event was hosted by the 229th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
"During this month, anyone and everyone is encouraged to unite in the work to end domestic violence" declared Rio Grande City Mayor Joel Villarreal. "We ask you to help spread awareness about Domestic Violence to end abuse for good."
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed every October in the United States. It is a time to raise awareness about domestic violence and its impact on individuals, families, and communities.
The month-long observance was first introduced in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. During this month, many independent organizations, as well as municipal, state, and federal bodies, bring heightened attention to domestic violence.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, there are resources available to help. You can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or visit their website at www.thehotline.org for more information.
