The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) is reminding flood victims in the Rio Grande Valley that flood damage to vehicles is covered by comprehensive policies.
“If your car flooded and you’ve got comprehensive coverage, contact your agent or company as soon as possible,” said TDI spokesperson Jerry Hagins.
TDI also offered several tips to those affected by flooding:
Take photos of the damage and, if possible, of your car submerged.
It’s best to talk to a mechanic before trying to dry out a car that got water inside.
Beware of flooded cars that may soon appear on the resell market. The National Crime Bureau offers a free service on its VINCheck website (https://www.nicb.org/how-we-help/vincheck) that will show if a vehicle has been listed as a total loss.
Call TDI’s Consumer Help Line at 1-800-252-3439 if you have questions or to get a contact number for your insurance company.
More tips for filing an auto flood claim can be found on the TDI website.
